"Simple Life" Stars as Camp Counselors?
NOT!

"In the absence of Shame, all conduct is excusable."

In a deliberately provocative act by the Producers of "The Simple Life" and its stars, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton, storylines for the 5th season place the young celebrities into the lives of real children who are attending theme camps, joining the adolescent campers in their quarters, sharing the joys of camp life from meals to showers, cameras in tow…allegedly there to serve as counselors.

Have they no shame? When are we going to stop rewarding bad behavior? There will be no end of camp hopefuls who, along with their parents, will put decency at risk for the chance to acquire fifteen minutes of fame. Most parents, thank God, will not permit their children to be exposed to these toxic vixens…but not all. What conceivable advice do Nicole and Paris have to offer to teens? What is the real message submerged beneath the carefully crafted storylines? We are told that taping may be delayed because both of the young stars have to face possible jail time for a variety of offences ranging from DUI's to parole violations. Given their well-documented reputations, what life lessons can Richie and Hilton provide?

How is this even permissible? In every Camp setting I know…except in the wayward minds of Hollywood…Camp Counselors are taken seriously. They are fingerprinted, taught the rules regarding close association with children, and chosen for their character. In California, where they plan to film these shows, the laws regarding the employment of children say that no minor may be put to work if there is the slightest risk to their "health, safety and morals." The Laws that speak to adults in close association with teenagers while at camp are even more severe.

Is anyone paying attention? How many assaults on common decency must we endure? You can forget about redeeming social values, my friends. There is a dangerous edge to this misbegotten project. What consequences might flow out of an impressionable teenager's close association with the stars of "The Simple Life?"

Aren't you tired of the inmates running the asylum?
